Personal projects give me room to experiment, slow down and make photographs I might never make on an assignment. In an interview with About Photography, I discuss Kindred Guardians, my ongoing documentary project about people who dedicate their lives to animals, and what that work has taught me about patience, trust and storytelling.

The conversation moves from photographing rhino caretakers in Kenya to commercial hotel shoots, looking at how I approach different stories while continuing to develop my own work. We also talk about editing photographs, why an outside perspective matters and how personal projects can keep you growing as a photographer.
